SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE

Saturday, November 13, Sleep In Heavenly Peace unloaded all the lumber and equipment in the Wesley Parking lot to make beds for children. These beds are for children in our area that live in homes but they do not have a bed to sleep in. Celebrate Recovery  teamed up with the West Orlando chapter of Sleep In Heavenly Peace with a goal of making 20 beds. A bed cost $250, that includes the bed, mattress, pillow and blanket.  So for twenty beds $5,000 needed to be raised. By  Saturday $11,000 had been raised and 42 beds were built!!!

Bill heard about Sleep In Heavenly Peace and formed the West Orlando Chapter. He explained to all the volunteers what we would be doing. There were 120 volunteer - children, youth, men and women.

At 9 o'clock we started to build beds. Denise measured the boards and marked where they needed to be cut.

The board then was cut and ready to be sanded.

There was lots of sanding to be done. Glad there were electric sanders to use. There must have been about 50 sanders. Pastor Dawn teaching Jacob how to it.

Sanding,
and more sanding.  Yvonne sanding the edges, The edges all had to be rounded so the beds would be safe for the children.

The wood had to be marked where it was to be drilled.  Brandy worked with this boy. She held the wood in place while he hit the metal plate that marked it.
Then the holes were drilled.

Larry drilled holes at the end of the long sections for the side of the bed where it will be bolted together.

The boards were screwed together for the head board.

And the foot of the bed.

The headboard was branded with  sHp  and then dyed.
The long side boards also had to be dyed. These two boys put the board in the trough and made sure it was covered.

Once the boards were dry they were stacked and wrapped for transport. Kathy went around and around with the plastic wrap.

They were then loaded into the truck. All the equipment was cleaned up, taken apart, stored and packed into the truck by 11:30. You can volunteer to go with a team to deliver a bed to a child and help assemble it.  They have a waiting list of over 100 children in our area waiting for beds.

Some of the youth sitting on a finished bunk bed, that is what they look like when the bed is assembled in the home.
Dottie standing by the bed earlier in the morning.
Thanks to Sherry who made a delicious barbeque pork and chicken lunch for all the volunteers.
